Simply Greek at Roots Market, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

During my visit to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I drove by a large Amish farmers market called Root’s Country Market and Auction. In the middle of miles and miles of Amish farmland, the market was filled with tons of handmade items from furniture and tools, to jewelry and clothing. Root’s was a very loud place, packed full of the bustling activity of the auctioneers and vendors. Pastries, meat, and other handmade foods were everywhere. I came across a Greek food vendor, about to order a regular Gyro, when my eyes spotted four of the best words, “Greek Mac n’ Cheese”. At that moment, I knew I had to get that.

That’s right, I said Greek Mac n’ Cheese: Feta cheese, garlic, onions, parsley, tiny chopped tomatoes, and more, all on top of one side serving of elbow mac n’ cheese, all served in a plastic to-go bowl. This Mac n’ Cheese had well-balanced flavors between the cheese and onions. Normally, onions tend to overpower other flavors, but this time you can taste every ingredient in every bite. The mac n’ cheese had a chewy but soft texture, along with a little crispiness from the burnt parts from how it was baked in the oven. The feta cheese created a delicious, tangy flavor, and a granular texture that melts in your mouth as you chew.

All of the ingredients on top of the mac n’ cheese, gives you this garlic-onion flavor that tastes so close to a real gyro. Overall, I have to say that there is too little mac n’ cheese for $3.50 because of how good the mac n’ cheese is. Before you know it, the mac n’ cheese is gone! I was so sad, I wanted to get more, but I had no cash left, luckily they took credit cards too, so I hurried back excitedly and bought more mac n’ cheese to satisfy myself.
