Out of Business- Lula’s, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

On Franklin Street, the most “famous” street in Chapel Hill, lives the brand new Lula’s. Lula’s has been frying up a storm since it burst into the light of Franklin Street with style, signature fried chicken and, best of all, mac n’ cheese.

Lula’s is a corner restaurant, tended by very nice waitstaff, with a full bar full of only locally brewed drinks. As I went into Lula’s, I was greeted by the warm homey feeling that the restaurant’s furnishing filled me with. There were old photos of Franklin Street and modern wood appliances. Lula’s is a sit-down restaurant, but this time I took my food to go; either way, you are guaranteed to have good service, especially, if you go at a non-busy time like 12:20 or so.

Lula’s calls their mac n’ cheese “Mac with Cheeseā. They give you a good portion of mac n’ cheese for a side order that is $3.50. Lula’s mac n’ cheese is exceptionally good; the elbow noodles are soft and chewy, and the entire mac n’ cheese has a meaty flavor. The cheese is soft and melty with little shreds of partially melted cheddar, garnished with, what seemed like, a little rosemary. The cheese was also a bit on the greasy side, enough to grease your lips, but that is normal for a mac n’ cheese that has a lot of cheese. The elbow noodles seemed to melt in your mouth as you chew.

Their mac n’ cheese was baked and was particularly good, though there weren’t any charred peaks. I would definitely go back and get this mac n’ cheese again. I would definitely recommend this to cheese lovers. This mac n’ cheese is a bang for your buck, and totally worth going to with your friends or by yourself. Next time, I promise that I will try the sit-down dining experience rather than taking it to go.
