Jake’s Grill

Off the side of a road in Cockeysville, MD is a local barbeque restaurant called Jake’s Grill. The place was old and looked like it might have been somebody’s house years ago; however, the atmosphere was very welcoming. The service was super nice, almost made you feel like a family. Jake’s Grill served barbeque that was freshly smoked and/or grilled right out front of the building. The barbeque was amazing, and so was their mac n cheese.

As you enter, you order at a counter and you receive the mac n’ cheese in small, medium, or plastic tubs. As evidence of the nice service, I received the wrong sized tub of mac n cheese. I ordered a medium and received a small. When I told the person at the counter this, they immediately gave me the medium and they told me to KEEP the small. They didn’t even charge me for it!

Finally, I sat down to eat my delicious, hot mac n’ cheese. Upon first looking at it, the mac n’ cheese looked very noodle-y. There was a thick layer of cheese skin on top with a few burnt parts in there implying that it was baked. Then, I dug in.

The cheese tasted very different from your typical cheese! It had an odd flavor that was hard to pinpoint but was delicious all the same. The shredded, sharp cheddar cheese was, for lack of a better description, dry. There was no gooiness or creaminess to the cheese. I enjoyed the cheese this way; however, at times, I needed to drink some water to break up the thickness of the dry cheese. The cheese tasted a tiny bit spicy which was an interesting twist on the flavor profile. The spiciness was like a garlicky tang. The noodles were cooked just well enough that they were soft but still had a good amount of chewiness. The mac n’ cheese may have been very noodle-y, but it did not overpower the cheese.
Overall, I enjoyed this mac n’ cheese. I got this mac n’ cheese twice while I visited, and I would get it again. The price started at $1.50, which was great for the amount they gave me (a medium was maybe a pound to a pound and a half). Jake’s Grill is a lovely place, and I would highly recommend visiting.
